I chose to examine the number of female characters in animated films so I chose to compare Pixar and DreamWorks, arguable the two most successful computer animation companies.
After trying and failing to create straight lines on Inkscape, I ended up using Microsoft Excel. It took a while to count the characters but doing so gave me a little taste of how much math goes into making infographics sometimes.
Thought not technically part of this portfolio, I offer the draft as a warning against the following:
- using colors arbitrarily, particularly dull shades and tints of blue
- forgetting female characters in your favorite movies
- forgetting how tedious merging cells can be
- using the alignment tool on a program not meant for pictures
- using bland font, specifically the default 11 pt. Calibri
- neglecting to use any pictures in an infographic about animated films
- forgetting to realize how hard it is to compare two companies when one has made fourteen full-length theatrical films (Pixar) and the other has made twenty-seven full length theatrical films (DreamWorks)
- using decimals when describing the average number of characters
- not taking inflation into consideration when researching how much money each film made
